Africa Development Promise works in Gayaza and Kabubbu Parishes of Nangabo Sub-County, in Wakiso District. We support women's agricultural cooperatives with a focus on growing mushrooms. In this sub-county mushroom cultivation is becoming increasingly popular especially among women because they are nutritious, require limited space to grow, mature quickly and provides a quick income for the family. However, large-scale mushroom production is still in its infancy and we are providing them with support to scale their mushroom business.
- To scale and improve quality of mushroom production by the members.
- To build the mushroom out-growers scheme -- outsourcing the mushroom farming to community members to boost production.
- To engage in value added products from mushrooms.
- To provide access to solar energy to help process mushrooms.
The out-grower scheme
The benefit of the out-grower scheme (also known as contract farming) is reciprocal. The out-growers offer the cooperative a reliable source of additional mushrooms to meet market demand while local growers have access to a guaranteed market, technical skills, affordable inputs that lead to additional household income.
solar energy for productive use
With a $200,000 seed-grant from IEEE Smart Village, Africa Development Promise is piloting five solar energy kiosks in Gayaza and Kabubbu Parishes of Nangabo Sub-county of the Wakiso District of Uganda. We will operate a micro-franchise solar kiosk business model that will be operated by a group of trained women entrepreneurs. Through the solar kiosk the communities will have access to a range of solar lighting products depending on their needs and capacity to pay. The kiosk will support agriculture and other rural enterprises with a selection of battery operated tools such as dryers, sprayers, rollers, saws, batteries and drills to help enhance efficiency and productivity. Local farmers are often not aware of the variety of tools that are available to improve their productivity. The kiosk will become a place for local social engagements and be a facility to conduct awareness campaigns to draw the attention to the benefits of new products and services and help potential new customers overcome their skepticism.
